Requirement/Eligibility
1. Applicants must be based in Africa or Europe, with projects that engage Africa–Europe or global systems of racial justice, decolonization, and/or reparatory justice.
2. Candidates should be early-stage researchers, artists, organizers, or practitioners whose work is visionary, experimental, and rooted in transformative change.
3. Applicants must demonstrate a deep commitment to racial justice, decolonial thinking, and Afro-feminist values.
4. Fellows should possess the ability to work collaboratively and navigate complex political, cultural, or social environments.
5. Applicants must have a working knowledge of English, although proficiency in additional languages (especially French) is an asset.
6. Proposed projects should be in their nascent phase, with a clear connection to themes like climate justice, abolition, racial equity, healing justice, technology and surveillance, migration, or cultural power.
7. Applicants must commit to bi-monthly online sessions and active participation throughout the two-year fellowship.
8. Open to individuals with interdisciplinary backgrounds, including art, research, policy, organizing, and community development.
9. No academic or institutional affiliation is required – grassroots thinkers and doers are highly encouraged.
10. Applicants must submit a detailed application including background, project idea, and motivations before the deadline.
Duration/Stipend
The AfaRise Fellowship runs from 2025 to 2027 (two full years). It is a fully virtual program, ensuring accessibility and engagement across geographies. Fellows will participate in bi-monthly sessions, deep-dive collaborations, and cohort-led thematic explorations. Each fellow will receive a stipend of €200 per working session, designed to offset participation costs and support their ongoing work. In addition, fellows gain access to a global support network, co-authorship opportunities, media amplification, and invitations to international policy and civic forums.
