The Knight-Wallace Fellowships offer accomplished journalists two rare commodities: time and resources. Journalists eager for growth and deeply committed to the future of journalism spend an academic year at the University of Michigan to access the resources of a world-class university and dive into a journalism project. Areas of focus can include but are not limited to sharpening professional skills, addressing a challenge facing your newsroom, digging into data and research for a long-term reporting project, or developing a journalism venture.

All Fellows awarded our in-person fellowship must maintain residency in Ann Arbor for the duration of the fellowship, attend all program seminars and events, and make the fellowship their primary professional focus. Applicants working in a newsroom are encouraged to obtain employer consent granting a leave of absence with the understanding that, upon completion of the fellowship and where applicable, the Fellow will return to their place of employment.

Requirements / Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowship, applicants must:
1. Have at least five years of journalism experience and be currently working in journalism, whether in newsrooms or as independent journalists.
2. Represent a broad spectrum of journalism roles, including reporters, editors, data specialists, visual journalists, audio producers, engagement strategists, designers, developers, entrepreneurs, or change agents within media organizations.
3. If not a full-time journalist, the majority of your work must be journalistic in nature. The fellowship excludes full-time academics, public relations writers, internal trade writers, lobbyists, and public advocates.
4. U.S. citizens must apply as U.S. applicants regardless of their current location or employer; non-U.S. citizens must apply as international applicants regardless of where they work. Note: Green Card holders apply as international applicants.
5. Commit to residing in Ann Arbor, Michigan for the fellowship duration, fully engaging with the program seminars, workshops, and activities.
6. Obtain employer consent for a leave of absence if currently employed in a newsroom, with the understanding of returning post-fellowship where applicable.
