This isn’t just a dream. It’s the 2025 Melton Foundation Global Citizenship Video Essay Competition, held in partnership with Global Goals Week and it’s calling on young Africans aged 18 to 30 to speak up, stand out, and drive real change.
As the world marks the 10th anniversary of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Melton Foundation invites youth to reflect on progress, identify challenges, and propose bold, practical, and inspiring solutions that can move Africa forward.

Organized by the Melton Foundation Africa, this video essay competition is more than just a contest, it’s a movement. It’s a call to Africa’s vibrant, diverse youth to use storytelling as a tool to envision a better future.
Through short video essays, participants are encouraged to reflect on local and continental realities while connecting their ideas to the global vision of the SDGs and the spirit of Global Citizenship.
Melton Foundation Africa, in partnership with Global Goals Week, invites young people across Africa aged 18 to 30 through power of storytelling share their unique perspective on how the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) can be harnessed to build a better future for their countries and the continent as a whole. As we mark the 10th anniversary of the SDGs, we call on young Africans to reflect, imagine, and propose bold solutions under one of our three powerful themes. Video submissions should be rooted in the realities of Africa, inspired by the vision of the SDGs, and guided by the spirit of Global Citizenship
Themes You Can Choose From
Entrants must base their video on one of the following three transformative themes:
- Reimagining Africa
- Reflect on the continent’s development through the SDG lens.
- Explore how young people can drive change around identity, purpose, and youth action.
- Share bold, practical ways to reshape Africa’s future.
2. Beyond Borders, Beyond Barriers
- Talk about cross-cultural collaboration and partnerships.
- Explore the role of technology, shared learning, and inclusion in building a connected Africa.
- Emphasize unity, innovation, and working across borders.
3. Young Africans as Global Citizens

Requirements/ Eligibility criteria
To qualify for this exciting and impactful competition, participants must:
- Be a citizen or resident of an African country
- Submit a 2–3 minute video essay in English (or with English subtitles)
- Be between 18 to 30 years old by the competition deadline
- Focus on one of the three provided themes
- Present original ideas, filmed clearly (no professional equipment required, just a clear message and presentation)
- Submit by the 14th of September, 2025
No formal background in media, politics, or public speaking is required — just your voice, your phone, and your passion for change.
