Requirements/Eligibility

The Schwarzman Scholars Program is highly competitive and seeks candidates who demonstrate academic excellence, exceptional leadership potential, and a strong interest in understanding the geopolitical landscape, particularly China’s global influence. To apply for the 2025–2026 academic year, applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Undergraduate Degree (or equivalent):
– Applicants must have successfully completed an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university before August 1, 2025.
– There is no specific major requirement, but all fields of study are welcomed. The program values diversity in academic backgrounds, including science, humanities, arts, business, and engineering.

2. Age Requirement:
– Candidates must be at least 18 but not yet 29 years of age as of August 1, 2025.
– This means applicants must be born after August 1, 1996 and before August 1, 2007.

3. English Language Proficiency:
– All instruction is in English, so proficiency is required. Applicants whose native language is not English must submit valid English proficiency test scores.
– Acceptable tests and minimum scores:
– TOEFL iBT: 100
– IELTS: 7.0
– Cambridge Advanced (C1) or Proficiency (C2): 185
– Applicants who studied at an institution where English was the primary language of instruction for at least two years are exempt.

4. Leadership and Community Engagement:
– A demonstrated record of leadership in academic, professional, or civic contexts is essential.
– Applicants should possess a strong character, an ability to inspire and lead others, and a deep commitment to building cross-cultural understanding.

5. Academic Excellence:
– While there is no formal GPA cutoff, successful applicants typically have a strong academic record. Intellectual curiosity and critical thinking skills are highly valued.

6. Global Mindset and Commitment to Public Service:
– Schwarzman Scholars should be globally-minded individuals who want to make a positive impact in the world.
– They should have an interest in global affairs and a strong desire to build relationships with China and other cultures.

7. Application Materials:
Applicants must submit the following:
– Completed online application form
– Current resume/CV (maximum 2 pages)
– Two essays: a leadership essay (up to 750 words) and a statement of purpose (up to 500 words)
– Official transcripts
– Three letters of recommendation
– A video introduction (1 minute in length)
– English proficiency test scores (if required)
– Optional: An optional short answer about how you handled a past failure or setback (up to 100 words)

Application Deadline:


U.S. and Global Applicants (outside China):
Applications for the 2025–2026 Schwarzman Scholars cohort open in April 2024 and close at 11:59 p.m. EDT on September 12, 2024.

Applicants with Chinese Passports:
Chinese applicants follow a different timeline. Applications for this group typically open in January 2024 and close in May 2024. Finalists are interviewed in June and admitted by July.

It is strongly advised that applicants start early to prepare all components of the application, particularly recommendation letters and video submissions.
