280,000 Population Surge Revealed After Statistics Canada Revision
Canada’s population grew by 280,000 people in 2025 rather than shrinking, according to revised figures released by Statistics Canada on September 23. Economic analysts, municipal planners, and housing officials are now recalibrating their models after the correction wiped out an earlier estimated drop of 102,000 people.
New Calculation Method Captures Missing Residents
The significant 382,000-person swing stems from a newly adopted calculation method designed to account for two specific groups previously missed by standard tracking. Statistics Canada now captures temporary residents who left the country before their permits expired, alongside individuals remaining in Canada while processing extension applications under maintained status. Between 2022 and 2025, Canada’s total population rose from 38,559,788 to 41,435,888, adding nearly 2.9 million people in three years and placing immense pressure on housing, health care, and job markets.
