To study in Canada for more than six months you need a study permit. The rules have tightened since 2024, so older guides are often wrong. This guide covers what a Nigerian applicant needs in 2026: the acceptance letter, the provincial attestation letter, proof of funds, work rules and the steps to apply. Check IRCC for the latest figures before you pay for anything.
What you need before you apply

Canada limits the number of new study permits each year, which is why the PAL exists. Quebec also requires a certificate of acceptance (CAQ) before you apply for the federal permit. The Student Direct Stream, which offered faster processing, closed in November 2024, so every applicant now applies through the regular route.

Tuition and airfare in the table are examples. Use the real figures from your offer letter. Family members who travel with you add to the living-cost requirement. Funds can come from savings, a guaranteed investment certificate or a sponsor, but each document must be traceable and recent.
How to apply
- Choose a DLI and a programme. Check that the programme is eligible for a post-graduation work permit if you want to work after you finish.
- Get your acceptance letter and your attestation letter, if you need one.
- Collect documents: passport, funds, statement of purpose, transcripts and language test.
- Apply online on the IRCC portal and pay the fees.
- Give biometrics at an authorised centre when asked.
- Wait for the decision and check the IRCC processing times tool for the current estimate for Nigeria.
Working while you study
Eligible students may work off campus for up to 24 hours a week during the term, and full time during scheduled breaks. The old 20-hour limit no longer applies. Your permit must allow work, and your programme must meet the rules.
After graduation
The post-graduation work permit (PGWP) needs a programme of at least eight months at an eligible institution, and you apply within 180 days of getting your completion letter. University graduates need a language score of CLB 7, and college graduates CLB 5. Some programmes must also fall within a list of eligible fields of study. Mistakes that delay approval
- Applying without a required attestation letter.
- Funds that cannot be traced or are too recent to be credible.
- A statement of purpose that does not explain why this course fits your background.
- Choosing a school that is not on the DLI list.
