Canada’s Visitor Visa Update, Because Who Doesn’t Love Bureaucracy?

As of May 7, 2025, the Canadian government has updated its visitor visa policy, affecting international travelers planning to visit Canada. The update requires many passport holders to obtain a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa or TRV) to enter Canada, including those traveling for:

  • Tourism or family visits
  • Short-term courses or conferences
  • Transit through Canada to another destination

What is a Visitor Visa?

A Visitor Visa is a document placed in your passport, indicating that you meet Canada’s entry requirements. Visa officers may issue:

  • Single-entry visa: Allows one entry into Canada
  • Multiple-entry visa: Allows multiple entries into Canada, usually valid up to 10 years or until your passport or biometric data expires

How Long Can You Stay in Canada on a TRV?

  • Default stay: Most visitors can remain in Canada for up to 6 months per entry
  • Custom duration: A border services officer may allow a longer or shorter stay, noted in your passport or Visitor Record
  • No stamp?: If there’s no stamp in your passport, you’re authorized to stay for 6 months from your arrival date or until the earliest expiry date of your passport or biometrics

Super visa holders entering after June 22, 2023, are permitted a 5-year stay per entry.

eTA or Visitor Visa: Which Do You Need?

Before applying, confirm which entry document you need. Your requirement depends on:

  • Nationality: Your country of citizenship
  • Travel document: Type of passport or travel document
  • Issuing country: Country that issued your passport or travel document
  • Mode of travel: Air, land, or sea

Some travelers only need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) when arriving by air, while others must apply for a full visitor visa, even if just transiting through a Canadian airport.

How to Apply

To apply for a Visitor Visa, you’ll need to:

  • Submit an application: Online or paper application
  • Provide required documents: Passport, proof of financial support, and other documents
  • Pay the application fee: Fee varies depending on the type of visa and application method

Tips and Reminders

  • Check your eligibility: Before applying, ensure you meet the eligibility requirements
  • Apply in advance: Allow sufficient time for processing
  • Ensure your passport is valid: Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure date from Canada

By understanding the updated visitor visa policy and requirements, you can ensure a smooth and successful application process.
