Every UK visa application from Nigeria includes a biometrics step: you give your fingerprints and a photo at a visa application centre, and your passport is checked. This guide covers the UK process only. If you are applying for a Schengen or Canadian visa, read our guide to biometrics for Schengen and Canada instead.
Who Runs UK Biometrics in Nigeria?
VFS Global runs the UK visa application centres in Nigeria. Its Abuja, Ikeja and Victoria Island centres have been operating since November 2024. In 2025 VFS added premium application centres in Enugu, Port Harcourt and Kano, so applicants outside Lagos and Abuja do not always have to travel to the big cities.

Centre details and hours can change. Confirm the address and opening hours when you book. The Enugu and Port Harcourt centres, for example, listed opening hours of 8 am to 5 pm at launch.
What Premium Centres Offer
- You can submit your application and enrol your biometrics locally.
- Document upload assistance and application status notifications.
- Courier return of documents.
- A “Keep My Passport While Applying” option, which lets you keep your passport after biometrics and send it in only once a decision is made.
Optional services carry extra charges that are shown when you book. They are not required, and they do not change the decision.
Step by Step: From Application to Appointment
- Apply online. Use the official GOV.UK application for your visa type. Visitors can apply up to 3 months before travel, and students up to 6 months before the course starts.
- Pay the fee. Fees are set by the Home Office and are shown during the application.
- Book your appointment. Choose a centre and a time on the VFS Global UK page for Nigeria. Any VFS service charges are shown when you book.
- Prepare your documents. Upload or bring the documents named in your application.
- Attend. You give your fingerprints and a photo and prove your identity with your passport.
- Wait for the decision. It arrives by email or letter.
Only book through the official VFS Global website. Anyone who offers to sell you an appointment slot or guarantee one is not acting for the visa service.
What to Bring
- Your passport or travel document.
- Your appointment confirmation.
- Any original documents the application tells you to bring.
- Your application reference number.
When Does the Clock Start?
UK visit and study visas outside the UK are normally decided within about 3 weeks. UK Visas and Immigration counts that time from the day you prove your identity, which means the day you attend the centre for biometrics. Booking late therefore delays the decision. If you plan to travel on a fixed date, book the earliest appointment you can. For what to do if a decision is slow, see our guide on delayed visas.
A Hypothetical Example
This is an illustration, not a real case. A traveller in Port Harcourt applies online on 1 June but cannot get an appointment until 12 June. The decision timer starts on 12 June, not 1 June. If she planned to travel on 25 June, the 3-week target already runs past her date.

Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| No slots at your nearest centre | Check other centres, including premium ones, and check again at different times of day |
| No confirmation email | Check spam, then sign in to your VFS account to see whether the booking exists |
| Fingerprint scanner cannot read your prints | Staff will retry. Dry or worn fingers are common. Tell staff if you have a hand injury |
| You missed your appointment | Book another. The decision clock does not start until you attend |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a photo taken as well as fingerprints?
Yes. You give fingerprints and a photo.
Do I get my passport back on the day?
For a visitor application, the UK guidance says your passport is returned the same day. Some visa types and the premium options work differently, so follow the instructions in your booking.
Can I book biometrics before I apply online?
No. Complete the online application first, because the appointment is linked to it.
Is the process the same for study, work and visit visas?
The biometrics step is the same. The documents, fees and decision times differ by visa.
