The AfricaLics PhD Visiting Fellowship Programme (VFP) 2027 is an initiative managed by AfricaLics through the Sida-supported RCS project, offering a three-month research visit hosted at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in South Africa. If you are an African PhD student working in Innovation and Development, this fellowship is designed to strengthen your academic and research capabilities, elevate the quality of your dissertation, and prepare you for a robust career in academia, the private sector, or government and policymaking. Requirements/Eligibility Criteria
Be working actively on a subject relevant to innovation and development.
Be enrolled as a PhD student at a university in Africa.
Have preferably completed your first year of studies by December 2026.
Possess a background in Economics, Sociology, Political Science, Science and Technology Policy, Geography, History, or Development Studies, or work within STEM and manufacturing fields from a social science perspective.
Possess adequate literacy in English.
Fellowship Benefits

Travel insurance issued with your ticket serving as health insurance for minor ailments during the fellowship period.
A monthly living stipend amounting to approximately $600 to cover living expenses and local travel in Johannesburg.
Coverage for participation in joint courses, mentorship fees, and select short-courses deemed important for your PhD studies.
Funding for two face-to-face meetings between students, home supervisors, and mentors.
Selection Criteria
Focus and relevance: Clear relevance to Innovation and Development studies in Africa and the AfricaLics research agenda, with specified research questions.
Theoretical and conceptual framework: A well-elaborated explanation of the framework rooted in innovation and development studies.
Methodological clarity and rigor: Evidence of adequate methods, clear data sources, and relevant collection methods.
Successful candidates receive a return economy flight to Johannesburg, accommodation, travel insurance for minor health issues, and a living stipend of approximately $600 per month.
African PhD students enrolled at an African university who have preferably completed their first year by December 2026 and focus on innovation and development from social science or related perspectives are eligible.
