UK Professionals Bypass LMIA Rules for Canadian Work Permits
British citizens working in finance, engineering, technology, and business services can now move to Canada for work without going through the usual Labour Market Impact Assessment process. The pathway officially opened on September 1, 2026, after Canada completed its ratification of the United Kingdom’s CPTPP accession protocol on July 3.
This new framework doesn’t replace Canada’s existing Trade Continuity Agreement with the UK; instead, it runs alongside it to give businesses and workers another option for temporary entry.
Who Qualifies for the T52 Exemption
This route is built strictly for qualified British professionals, not job-seekers looking to land work after arriving in the country. To use the T52 exemption code under Canada’s International Mobility Program, you need a pre-arranged job offer or a service contract locked down before you apply.
The agreement targets specific roles falling under National Occupational Classification TEER categories 0 and 1, including financial managers, engineers, and technology experts.
You’ll also need to meet a few baseline requirements:
- Hold a British citizenship.
- Possess the specific educational credentials required for your occupation.
- Bring at least two years of paid experience in your sector.
- Secure wages that match what similarly qualified professionals make in the same Canadian region.
- Meet any mandatory licensing or certification rules tied to your job.
What Employers and Workers Need to Know
For hiring companies, the T52 code removes the heavy lifting of proving that no Canadian worker could be found for the role. You won’t need to run local job advertisements or wait through standard LMIA processing queues to bring a qualified British specialist onto your team.
Even so, this isn’t an open work permit. The paperwork ties the worker to a specific employer, job title, and location. Initial permits under this agreement can be issued for up to one year, with extensions available if the worker continues to meet all program requirements.
