Many international students ask the same question before they enrol: how much can I work while I study? On a student visa (subclass 500), you may work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and without a limit during scheduled course breaks. This guide explains the rules, how to count your hours, and what happens after you graduate.

The 48-hour fortnightly cap has applied since 1 July 2023. Before that, the limit was 40 hours. Some election campaign proposals in 2025 suggested raising the cap to 60 hours, but that was a policy promise and has not changed the rule, so plan around 48.

How to count your hours
A fortnight runs from Monday to the Sunday of the following week. You must stay within 48 hours in any fortnight, not on average.

Keep a simple record of your hours, using a notes app or spreadsheet, and check your visa conditions in VEVO, the free online visa checking service. Your visa documents may still show an older limit, so check what applies to you.
Why the limit matters
Breaking your work condition can lead to your visa being cancelled. Work only up to the limit, and use only lawful employment. You are entitled to at least the minimum wage and safe conditions. If you are underpaid or exploited, you can contact the Fair Work Ombudsman.
Applying for the student visa
- The base application fee is AUD 2,000 since 1 July 2025.
- You apply online through an ImmiAccount, with a confirmation of enrolment from a registered provider.
- You must show that you are a genuine student, that you have enough money, and that you meet English, health and character requirements.

After graduation: the Temporary Graduate visa
Graduates of eligible courses can apply for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), which gives full work rights for a set period. The length of the visa, the age limit and the qualification rules have changed in recent years, so check the Department of Home Affairs page for your course level and date of graduation. Apply within the time limit after your course ends.
