Canada Job Vacancies Hit 510,200 as Trades and Tech Demand Rises
Statistics Canada recorded 510,200 job vacancies during the second quarter of 2026, holding steady above the half-million mark even as employer demand shifts sharply toward specific technical and manual trades. Statistics Canada reported that the national job vacancy rate remained fixed at 2.8 per cent, leaving three unemployed people chasing every open position.
Trades and Tech Sectors Expand While Degree-Required Fields Contract
The headline total masks distinct shifts across the national labor market. Trades, transport, and equipment occupations reached 98,600 vacancies, marking a 6.6 per cent increase from the previous year, while manufacturing and utilities jumped 19.2 per cent. Transport truck driver openings climbed by 1,200 to reach 13,800, and material handler positions rose by 2,100 to 9,200. Residential and commercial installers and servicers also saw gains, increasing by 1,200 to 2,900.
