Hundreds of Iranian families awaiting permanent residency in Canada are racing against a tight administrative clock after Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) flagged their mandatory past military service as potential grounds for inadmissibility.

The warning landed on August 6 via identical procedural fairness letters sent to more than 400 families currently caught in immigration limbo. Every reviewed letter cites prior conscription into the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as the core security trigger. Because the Canadian government designated the IRGC as a terrorist organization under the Criminal Code in July 2024, immigration officers are now evaluating these historic, involuntary service records through a counter-terrorism lens.
