Many visa applications from Nigeria do not go to the embassy itself. They go to a consulate in Lagos, a visa application centre run by a service provider, or an office in another country that represents the destination. This guide explains the difference, shows where the main destinations process Nigerian applications and covers booking, fees and scam warnings.
Embassy, High Commission, Consulate and Visa Centre

How to Book an Appointment
- Find the right office. Use the destination’s official website, not a search result that only looks official. Official sites end in the government’s own domain, for example gov.uk, canada.ca or diplo.de.
- Read the checklist. It names the documents, the fee and the booking system.
- Create the account or form. Use the same name spelling as your passport.
- Book early. Demand in Lagos is high. The German mission in Lagos advises applicants to book well in advance.
- Pay as instructed. The German mission in Lagos takes card payments only, while its Abuja embassy takes cash only. Always confirm the payment method before you travel.
- Keep your confirmation. You will need it at the gate.
Public access to embassies and consulates is generally by appointment only. Turning up without one rarely works.
Services Beyond Visas
- Emergency travel documents for a country’s own citizens abroad.
- Help for citizens who are ill, injured or the victim of a crime.
- Notarial and document services, which vary by mission. The British Deputy High Commission in Lagos, for example, does not carry out notarial acts in Commonwealth countries.

Avoiding Scams
- Embassies do not sell appointment slots or promise approval for a fee.
- Only pay through the payment page named on the official site.
- Be suspicious of anyone who offers a “special route” into the embassy.
- Keep your own login details. Do not hand over your account to a third party.
