UK Visa Timelines: What to Expect From Overseas Applications
UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) processes most standard work, study, and visitor visa applications submitted from outside the UK within three weeks, while family routes require a 12-week wait.
Who Needs to Know These Timelines
These service standards apply to anyone applying from outside the United Kingdom for a visitor permit, student status, work authorization, or family reunion. If you are submitting paperwork from abroad, your application timeline dictates when you can safely book travel or plan your relocation.
Starting and Stopping the Clock
Your application processing time does not begin the moment you hit submit online. UK Visas and Immigration starts the clock only after you complete one of two verification steps.
You must either verify your identity and submit your documents using the UK Immigration: ID Check app, or attend an appointment at a visa application centre (VAC) to provide your fingerprints and a photograph. The process ends when you receive a letter or email notifying you of a decision.
Do not book travel until you have that decision letter in hand. If you left your passport at a VAC during your appointment, you must wait until staff contact you before returning to pick it up.
Potential Delays and Expenses
Your application can take longer than the standard window if information is inaccurate, supporting documents require verification, or you need to attend an interview. Additional checks regarding criminal convictions, surges in global visa demand, or unexpected technical outages on visa systems will also stall your timeline.
If your application takes longer than expected or gets refused, UK Visas and Immigration will not reimburse travel costs or any other expenses. You should not contact UKVI to check on your status unless the standard processing window has passed and you have not heard anything.
