If your UK visa was refused, the first thing to check is what kind of visa it was and whether the refusal letter gives you any right to challenge the decision. For most Nigerians who apply from Nigeria for a visitor visa, there is no appeal and no administrative review. The usual route is to apply again with a better application. This guide explains each option, when it applies, and how to decide.
Start with your refusal letter
The letter lists the reasons for refusal and states whether you can ask for a review or appeal. Everything else depends on this. Keep the letter and your full application copy together, and read the exact wording of each reason. Words like “not satisfied” and “genuine visitor” point to different problems from “documents not provided”.

Option 1: Apply again
There is no fixed waiting period before you can reapply. But applying again with the same documents usually gives the same result, and each refusal stays on your record. Before you reapply:
- Read every reason in the letter and answer each one with evidence.
- Make sure your form, documents and travel plan all agree with each other.
- Add a short cover letter explaining what is different from your last application.
- Confirm you chose the right visa category for your purpose.

Option 2: Administrative review
Administrative review asks the Home Office to check whether a caseworker made an error, such as missing a document you did send. It is only available if your refusal letter says so, and the letter states the deadline. You cannot add new evidence. The fee is £80, and it is refunded if the review succeeds. A standard visitor visa refused outside the UK does not normally have this right.
Option 3: Appeal
Appeal rights were cut back a lot. For a visitor visa you can generally appeal only on human rights or discrimination grounds, and those cases are rare. If your letter gives appeal rights, it will say where and when to appeal. Do not assume you have them.
Option 4: Judicial review
Judicial review is a legal challenge heard by the Upper Tribunal. It looks at whether the decision was lawful, not whether you deserved the visa. It starts with a letter before claim, has strict time limits and is expensive. It rarely makes sense for a simple visitor visa refusal.
