For many Nigerian applicants, the hardest part of a visa is not the form but the appointment: finding a slot, getting to a centre and handing in documents. VFS Global runs visa application centres in Nigeria for several governments, and in the last two years its network has changed for UK and German applicants. This guide sets out what has changed, which optional services exist, and how to book safely.

What has changed
| Country | Change | Where |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | New UK visa application centres run by VFS Global began operating on 19 November 2024 | Abuja, Ikeja and Victoria Island (Lagos) |
| Germany | The German foreign office renewed its contract with VFS Global, which handles application collection, biometrics and appointments in Abuja and Lagos | Abuja and Lagos |
| Germany (student visas) | From 25 March 2026, student visa applications are no longer submitted at the consulate. You register online, book an appointment and attend the VFS Global centre in Lekki, Lagos | Lekki, Lagos |
The decision on every application is still made by the visa authority, not by VFS Global. The centre collects documents and biometrics and passes the file on.

Optional services at the UK centres
The UK centres offer a set of paid extras. They are optional and do not change processing times or the outcome of your application.
| Service | What it does |
|---|---|
| Document upload assistance and document check | Staff help you upload and check your documents before submission |
| Submission outside business hours | Lets you submit at times that suit your schedule |
| SMS notifications | Text updates on the progress of your application |
| Courier return of passports | Your passport is delivered to you after a decision |
| Keep My Passport While Applying | You keep your passport after submission and biometrics, and hand it in only when a decision is ready |
| Premium Lounge | A dedicated, more personal submission experience |
| On Demand Mobile Visa | For applicants in Abuja, lets you submit from home, the office or another location. It covers submission only |
Check the VFS Global site for current prices before you add a service, because extras are charged on top of the visa fee.
How to book your appointment
- Start on the official government page for your visa type and follow its link to the visa centre booking system.
- Register on the official VFS Global website for your destination country.
- Fill in the application form and pay the visa fee as instructed.
- Pick a centre and an appointment slot, then add any optional services you want.
- Print the confirmation and arrive with your original documents, copies and photos.
- Give your biometrics, submit your file and keep the tracking details.
Avoiding fake booking sites
VFS Global has warned applicants to book only through its official website, because fake sites and agents charge for appointments that are free to book. Appointments do not need an agent, and no agent can guarantee a slot or an approval.
- Type the official address yourself, or follow the link from the embassy or government page.
- Never send passport scans or payment details by email or chat to an unofficial contact.
- Check the centre address before you travel to it.
- Be wary of anyone who offers an appointment for a fee, or promises priority on a mobile service.
Choosing the right centre
| Your situation | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Living in Lagos, applying to the UK | Ikeja and Victoria Island are both options, so choose by travel time and available slots |
| Living in Abuja, applying to the UK | The Abuja centre is the one with the On Demand Mobile Visa option |
| Applying for a German student visa | Use the Lekki centre in Lagos after registering and booking online |
| Living outside Lagos and Abuja | Plan travel and accommodation for the appointment day, and check whether your destination uses other centres |
Worked example (hypothetical)
A family of four in Abuja plans a UK visit. They book one appointment slot for each person on the official site, add the document check and passport courier services, and attend the centre together to give biometrics. Because the extras do not speed up the decision, they still apply well ahead of their travel date and keep refundable bookings until the visas arrive.
Checklist before your appointment
- Passport with enough validity and blank pages
- Completed application and payment receipt
- Photos that meet the size and background rules
- Supporting documents in the order the checklist gives, with copies
- Your appointment confirmation, printed or on your phone
Frequently asked questions
Does using a premium service speed up my visa?
No. Optional services change how you submit and receive documents, not how long the decision takes or whether it is approved.
